An Alphabet of London
Brown, C (2012), An alphabet of London, London, Merrell Publishers Ltd
Brown recounts his own memories of growing up in London, and also describes how he creates his distinctive prints. His unique, often humorous take on London will delight anyone who lives in or visits the city.
His prints are very appealing and I can feel his love for this city from his works. His prints not only have delicate carving techniques, but also strong narrative. Even people who don't understand English or don't read the words carefully, they can also understand the story which author wants to tell. I also liked the way he portrayed the characters in his prints. There are some works that are not so detailed, but the author is very good at grasping the characteristics of people. For example, a hat, a pipe and a walking stick can show the identity of a person. The relationship between men, women, children and characters is clear.

Cedriclf's pattern is very modern. His pattern gives people a sense of rhythm. I think it represents a modern song.
Highly saturated colors were used in the pattern, and more than three colors appeared in a pattern. The author shows his process of making pattern on Instagram, it’s clear how he created these patterns.
What I like most about his works is that he integrated pattern into pattern. In each of his pattern designs, you can see another totally different pattern. I think this design is very interesting. It makes color and detail richer, but not multifarious, because it is regular.

Japanese wave pattern is very classic. It comes from the famous Ukiyo-e painting, and the most famous one is Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (《富嶽三十六景》). Many patterns of wave types are derived from it.
I like Japanese waves pattern very much. They have very natural pattern of continuous waves. In this project, I also want to draw a pattern that can be connected into a piece. I think this is a good example. The patterns are all seamless, but they're not rigid. Some of them are not even like pattern, I think it is a natural landscape painting. Smooth and regular lines and rich but not redundant details are good references for me.

Yayoi Kusama
Taft, C (2017), Yayoi Kusama, New York: Phaidon Press
Kusama's work has always had strong visual impact. She is known as the queen of dots, but more than dots appear in her pattern. She combines dots, lines and surface. Every dot is using a suitable place. The function of dots is to enhance the delicacy of the pattern. It's possible that you didn't notice how many dots there were at first glance, but when you look closely, "aha, there are so many dots hidden".
She even used her pattern in the installation art, which is a transition from 2D to 3D. These installation art are based on mirrors, they are actually only has a very small room, but it makes people feel that they are in the sea of dots or starry sky.

INTERNET PUPA

In the "light of the Internet" exhibition, the statue of "Pupa Children" has attracted people. It show the situation of children facing various network risks on the internet.
I think these sculpture are very creative. One of the two children was addicted to online games, the other was subjected to online violence. One is locked in voluntarily and unwilling to communicate with the outside world, and the other is trapped. Two different forms of “bondage”. Pupa actually compose by a string of website links. It vividly shows that people are troubled by network intrusion.

Japanese Pattern
Roojen Van, P (2013), Japanese Patterns, Amsterdam : Pepin Press
The book contain 4 pages of introduction and 12 large sheets of very high-quality wrapping paper.
The charm of Pattern is reflected in various aspects. I remember that I used to wrap books with the similar paper of this book, and I always felt good when I saw the books and wanted to hold them all the time. The theme of pattern in this book is Japan, and many Japanese elements appear in it, mostly focusing on animals. In fact, there are no more than three main objects in a piece of pattern. Through rotation and combination, the patterns look flexible and changeable. This set of works also reminds me that I should not add too many elements to my pattern, and it is better to combine them in a appropriate way. Don't make it all complicated or simple. The colour should also be related to the objects in the pattern to make the whole picture more harmonious. (The turtle is light green, the shrimp is the blue of the sea,red umbrella.)
