ME SOMEWHERE ELSE
by Chiharu Shiota
Link: https://www.blainsouthern.com/exhibitions/me-somewhere-else
In the titular installation, Me Somewhere Else, Shiota creates a vast net of yarn, which is suspended from the gallery ceiling and connected to the floor by a cast of the artist's feet. The blood red of the yarn is laden with symbolism, from the neural pathways in the human brain to the connections that bind us together.
Many people called it "the red line of uneasiness", because when they saw this exhibition, they felt very nervous and afraid.
I think Me Somewhere Else does a very good job of emotional contagion. The use of a large number of lines makes people feel constrained and suffocated. The red lines even looked like blood vessels. They hung down from the roots, as if there was blood flowing from the ceiling, causing people to be afraid and upset. The black lines let people thought about cobwebs, dust and prisons, and the stark contrast is chilling with the long white dress which has the feeling of death.

MARIA LAI

I like her work very much, and it's very similar to what I want to do. Rather than combining illustrations and "lines," her work relies more directly on embroidery. The workmanship was so good that the embroidery had a painterly effect. The same thread can express many different objects by her hands. Sometimes it's bright sunlight, sometimes it's dirt on the ground even blood. She didn’t choose to cut the thread which she did not finish, but let them twine together. This effect is very interesting, like the flat images jumped out.

Sebaldo

Sabaldo's drawing style is very lovely, but the content is totally different. This set of illustrations expresses the gloomy and depressed content in a naive and colorful way.
This image is very similar to my theme of "autistic". In Chinese, the literal meaning of "autistic" is "self-close". In this image, the head jumps out of the body into the cheese, which is a self-escape process. He doesn't want to face the world any more, he just wants to find a place to hide himself quickly. This kind of mind is very urgent, do not wait for the body to react, the head has gone in. It looks funny and interesting. I really like this expression.
The shrimp design is also very interesting. The man hid himself in a shrimp shell, and he was about to put shrimp’s head on. It is also an act of concealment. However, I think the most interesting thing is the shrimp can make people to image something more. The color of the shell shows that the shrimp is cooked. The first step people take when peeling shrimp is to pinch the head. Therefore, if this guy gets into this shrimp shell, when someone comes to peel the shrimp, something bloody happens.
This man is split in two. What attracts me is his expression. Whoever thought the scene was bloody, but this person is unmoved. In my opinion, this person can only be a corpse. However, I think the author is trying to reflect his psychological state —— he doesn't care about anything, even if his body is divided and he has lost his passion for life. That's what I call “zi bi”.(“autistic”)

This set of illustrations expresses very strong emotions. I even want to shouting with them. The author uses dark colors to create an atmosphere of despair. The drawing style is very realistic, which is why it can resonate with me.

This group of artworks are more like jewelry design. I like the bold use of lines. Unlike other artworks about threads. She doesn’t pursue delicate details, but as far as possible to show a distinctive feeling. Bizarre shapes catch people’s eyes. The vivid interpretation of model shows the dynamic sense of "line".

THE WORLD'S LONELIEST WHALE
Link: http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20150415-the-loneliest-whale-in-the-world
The 52-hertz whale is an individual whale of unidentified species, which calls at the very unusual frequency of 52 Hz. It has been detected regularly in many locations since the late 1980s and appears to be the only individual emitting a whale call at this frequency. It has been described as the "world's loneliest whale".
This whale gave me a lot inspiration.
I've been trying to figure out how to illustrate the difference between an autistic person and a normal person. I don't want to express it through plot, I want people to know that the person is "autistic" just by looking at the image. It’s so boring that just by putting a paper bag or something over his head, and the audience may not be able to distinguish if he's mentally "autistic" or he's actually wearing something on his head. However, if I just change the person's head to a whale, it would work much better. Anyone who knows the story of the whale will understand what I'm trying to say. Even if the reader knows nothing about the whale, when they see the man's head turned into a whale makes the character seems unusual. Audience will start to image something happened to him or he was mentally injured. People can't see his expression, the character seems to close himself.
Knits
WOVEN MATERIAL
I am looking for objects in my life that have this kind of weaving. This weaving method is generally machine weaving, fast and accurate, most of them used in cloth.
In China the cross stitch is also used in hand knitting. We use bamboo to weave baskets, sieves and other Articles for daily use.
